Bible stories

Many families belong to a Christian church, but do little to nourish their faith during the week, between church services. Like a flower, faith requires constant nurturing in order to yield the best results. You can hardly expect to water a rose bush on Sunday and then leave it to bake in the hot, summer sun for another week without water and have it remain healthy and full of blooms. It may well survive the week, but the flowers it produces certainly won’t be winning any prizes at the fall fair. But watering through the week, and fertilizing it as well, will lead to lush, spectacular flowering.

Feeding and watering your family’s faith throughout the week will result in similar success. Most churches offer bible study groups that meet on different days through the week and there are also social clubs and affiliated charity groups that are always happy to have new members. If your find your family is busy, with kids in school, parents working and a schedule that makes it difficult to commit to a set schedule, one of the best ways to nourish faith is to take advantage of those rare free moments to read and discuss Bible stories. Children love to hear their parents tell stories and even parents will benefit from the spiritual lessons and insights into everyday life contained in many of these biblical tales. Here are five popular Bible stories to get you started:

  • Hezekiah: A Faithful King. The story of a 25 year old King of Judah, a righteous man who dedicated himself to pleasing God (despite the fact that his father was among the most wicked of men and those around him pursued their own selfish desires).
  • Sarah. A woman whose inner faith far outshone her considerable physical beauty.
  • Mary and Martha. Many modern lessons can be learned when reading about what happened when Jesus and His disciples came to the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha just as they were sitting down to their meal.
  • Sharach, Meshach and Abed-Nego. Why were three men, held in high esteem by the government of Babylon, suddenly bound by guards and thrown into a furnace and what seemed like certain death?
  • Abraham. One of the most difficult and heart-rending accounts in bible scripture is the story of Abraham, who believed he was to sacrifice his son, Isaac, at the top of a mountain.
